Tel Locus goes through the rations grabbing a few Protein bars and one of the ration packs, "So what can you tell me about what we should be expecting for in terms of historical importance?" He looks through his saddlebag a small journal for notes, his trusted spell book, his brigandine, adding the few protein bars and a ration pack.
Tayari, after a moment's hesitation, follows Tel's lead and takes some food. It takes the zebra some effort to choose the normal food, rather than finding out what automaton fuel tastes like, but he manages.
As he sorts out his own pack, he listens for the answer to Tel's question. It was an interesting one; plus, it was a great distraction from how nervous he was.
Taking her place next to Tel Locus, a young, purple pegasus releases a groan that practically begged for the closest person to put her out of her misery. Complain as she might, she did ask- no, pratically begged her guardian for this. An adventure across the high seas? Strange, mysterious robot ponies? There was little to no chance the filly wsa going to turn that down. Maybe she would have given it a second though if she knew she would be sorting through all of her teacher's things as she the glowing sun bears down heavily on her. At least she had the foresight to bring along long lasting, non-melting candies with her, which she stashed in her bag under her spellbook.
Facing forward towards the front of the boat as to lets the winds blow strands of her hair off her face, the young pegasus casts and eye out to the ocean. Blue and shimmering under the sun's gaze, it was... nice. If she were honest to herself, she'd prefer it if it were a bit more... chaotic. Maybe a bit of stormy weather, or a pirate or two. Not that she'd wish harm on any of her nerdling companions, she's just incredibly bored.
Letting out another groan, the filly turned around to face the most mysterious member of the nerd brigade: the robot. Though she has made clear she was an ordinary pony once, she still called her a robot because... well, robots are cool. But she already promised Tel to not badger her with questions in exchange for being allowed to bring candy on this quest... And also permission to call this expedition a quest in the first place.
As for Tel's question, several things came to mind. "I bet whatever it is, it's gonna involve robots. Maybe with the lasers and whatnot. Let's hope they don't have tastebuds because we aren't gonna win them over with..." She looked down at the rations in disgust and scowled as she spat out, "Protein bars. Ech."
Tel Locus looks at her flatly "You should have thought about that before. Unfortunately I do not have any waterskins or boots, However I would suggest you boil any and all water before giving it to us organic ponies." He looks over the edge of the boat "At least tell me you have a map so we can route out a path surrounding water stops."
Tayari nods along with the map suggestion. "Yeah... Given the choice between drinking boot water and someone losing a shoe, or finding natural water supplies, I think I know which one is nicer."
A question re-enters his mind as he finally registers Star's statements, though; a question he'd meant to ask long ago, before his thoughts got sidetracked on matters of adventure, the dreadful feeling of inexperience, and whether that was a whale off the starboard side or just the shadow of a cloud. Or maybe it was a school of fish...
And just like that, the question was once again lost to the ever-shifting tides of the young zebra's mind, though he accepted that he knew of nothing in the world that could help to- oh, wait, that was it. "By the way... unrelated, but if we are dealing with an automaton rescue mission, I better check. Is medical care for automatons similar to organic ponies? 'Cause if we meet someone injured, better to know if a heal potion will work."
Hijinks' ears perked up as the call was made for land being spotted. Abandoning her previous duties, the filly dashed up to where Paddles sat. "Where?! I wanna see the lands!" she gushed, not paying attention to the canid's personal space. And true to the dog's word, there were splashes of green amongst the blue horizon.
"Land! Land! Wonderful land!" Hijinks cheered as her wings flared. Who cares if they had no water? Land was much better. Turning around to Tel and Star, she popped the question with a hopeful look, "Can I fly ahead? I promise to be careful! Pleeeeeease!" She practically begged to the two older ponies. She hadn't really talked to Paddles or Tayari yet, even if they seemed nice enough, though she didn't need their input to be able to finally get off this stupid boat.
Tel nods at StarSwept "Just be patient young filly, I swear if you hadn't pressured me when I was intoxicated I wouldn't even had considered bringing you with me on these exploration expeditions." He writes down notes in his journal "You have the map miss, Dusk? I really think we should try and plot out a route near water sources. Else you'll be rescuing us before bringing out any other automatons."
Tayari looks at Tel. "Wait, that's why she's here?" he asks, nodding towards Hijinks. "...Huh. I had been wondering... I mean! Let's sort out where we're going and when, and make sure all of us know it so we can regroup if any of us run off. Right? Maybe? Also water and all that... stuff." He kicked himself mentally for that 'contribution'.
Hijinks giggles as she thought back to that day in the bar. "Eeeheehee, yeah I remember that. Good times," she remarked casually. She still could not understand why adults liked those drinks so much. Judging by the smell, it must taste horrible. Give this filly cola any day.
The filly's amusement was not dulled by the zebra's comment, in fact it only made her grin wider. With a quick flap of her wings, Hijinks jumped away from Paddles and hovered right in front of Tayari's face... Perhaps a little bit too close for comfort as her nose was almost touching his.
"Friend!" She near shouted in the zebra's face, hoping her agilty has at least scared him a little bit. "I am here because I am undoubtedly awesome! And someone has to keep you dorks in line," she said, casting an eye over the rest of the crew. "Except for you, Paddles. Stay awesome, dog friend." She threw the Canidian a wink, which the dog just rolled his eyes at.
Turning back to Tayari, she regarded him with a kind smile. "So, TayTay. Can I call you TayTay?" She didn't wait for a response as she excitedly babbled on, "Anyways, TayTay. I'm not just any young filly, oh no. I am Hijinks! Slayer of rats!" She declared, jumping up on the boat railing, striking a heroic pose. "Like, for real! I set three on fire! Ask Tel, he was there! Trust me, if we encounter any rats on this journey, I'll totally take them on!"
Tel groans "She is persistent and does seem to be able to survive without getting hurt. I was just kicked out of the university after attaining my second Masters I went to a bar to sulk and she found me out." he looks at Hijinks "You can breath fire and burned a few rats. Just keep close to miss StarSwept so there are no issues later on." He looks at the binder before looking up at Paddles "I'm going to borrow this if it's alright with you. Seems the scientist forgot that organic ponies need to consume water in order to live." He looks at the mecha-mare. "I'm not going to let you live that down." he promises her.
Tayari blinks in response to the filly's actions. "...Huh? Something about TayTay? I mean sure, call me that if you like. Look, you don't have to justify yourself, Hijinks, I believe you. You wouldn't be on this trip if you couldn't handle yourself. I just hope I can keep up. W-with the energy, I mean."
With this, Tayari starts looking over the railing towards the incoming land. "Anyway, moving swiftly along! I'm all ready if you all are, so whoever wants to lead the way- Star, I suppose- I'll follow your lead."
Hijinks checked her pack, which remained with the rest of the supplies, confirming her new weapon was indeed inside. As the filly focused her vision on her pack, the bag itself started glowing red and began slowly lift itself off the ground. The pack hovered it's way over to Hijinks who looked quite pleased with herself. Even though her mage hand is a rather new ability, she was already making strides in her studies. She was quite certain that she could even lift up an adult pony if she exerted enough effort.
The filly reached out with her magic, this time undoing the straps. She pulled out a moderately large object that took up most of the space in the bag. It was a book. If the intricately detailed cover of the book was anything to go by, it was a spellbook. "Ah, my baby," she cooed as her hoof traced the spine of the book. "We are going to have fun, you and I. Yes... We are going to burn them all," she finished in a dark whisper. And in an instant, the book went back in her carry pack, straps rebinded themselves, and all hints of her previous words gone. She wasn't reeeeeally evil. She was just trying to spook the zebra next to her. Still, in these last few weeks, the filly has grown quite attached to her book. It will remain as the only book that the pegasus would treat well.
"Okay! I am ready!" she said to Star, smiling brightly. However, she doubted she could get away without carrying anything. With her mage hand, however, it should be a breeze. "Is there anything that I should carry? I can carry lots of stuff! Isn't that right, teach? I'm super strong!" Not as strong as Tel, but... she'd never say that out loud unless she was trying to butter the older pony up.
Tel rolls up the map and places it in his bag "Indeed miss, I hope you do better to remember your fleshy 'friendos' more often, I'd like to keep myself in one piece." He makes sure he has his bags and supplies gathered up before stepping off the boat stumbling a little as he walks off.
Tayari nodded, choosing not to comment on his actual experience with zebra survival methods. Instead, he said, "Excellent! Let's not waste more time, then," setting off the boat eagerly with his own supplies. "To adventure!"
As soon as the boat landed, Hijinks jumped off the boat, wings flared, and took off in to the sky armed only with her satchel heavy with the magic spellbook that she has grown attached to during the last month. Wind in her air, she briefly enjoyed the freedom of escaping that small boat, only to be sent back to the earth moments later... literally. With a smooth dive, the filly landed back next to the nerd group with a stylish flourish. "Hah. I know I am awesome, you don't have to remind me. But I wouldn't refuse if you were to tell me anyway," she said as she threw the others a cocky grin.
The island itself had beautiful beaches, and the water was blue as blue can be. Hijinks could even see a few crabs scuttle about. Unfortuneatly, the inner parts of the islands were covered in thick brush, with the exception of some of the taller mountains. While she was probably skilled enough to make a landing through trees and the underbrush, she doubted she could see anything below it. "So... I guess I could search for a lake... or a stream heading out in to the ocean, yeah? That's like... how to find water, isn't it?" The pegasus filly now regretted skipping out on those survival lessons.
"Ah well!" she said, turning to Star. "Tell me what to do, Cap! Otherwise I might just get a bit 'fired up'! Eeeheehee!"
